Municipal Solid Waste Disposal: How Can Companies Turn a Profit?

Municipal Solid Waste Disposal: How Can Companies Turn a Profit?

Oct 15, 2026

From End-of-Pipe Disposal to Resource-Oriented Operations, Intelligent Sorting Is Opening Up New Profit Space

As the treatment of municipal solid waste gradually upgrades toward reduction, resource recovery, and intelligence, the profit logic of the waste treatment industry is also changing.

In the past, municipal solid waste treatment mainly generated revenue from government payments, waste transportation, and end-of-pipe disposal. However, as operating costs rise and environmental requirements become stricter, the profit margins of the traditional model are being squeezed.

How to reduce treatment costs, increase the value of resource recovery, and make waste treatment projects sustainably profitable is becoming a core issue for the industry.

I. Why Are Profits from Traditional Waste Disposal Getting Thinner?

Mixed municipal solid waste has a complex composition. Plastics, metals, glass, paper, kitchen waste, and other materials are mixed together, and for a long time it has mainly relied on manual sorting, mechanical treatment, and final incineration.

For operating companies, there are three main pressures:

First, high disposal costs. Waste transportation, incineration, equipment operation, and other links continuously generate expenses. The larger the processing scale, the higher the total cost.

Second, heavy reliance on labor. Traditional sorting requires a large amount of manual labor. The working environment is harsh and management is difficult, and personnel costs continue to affect business operations.

Third, loss of resource value. Large amounts of plastics, metals, glass, and other materials that still have recycling value are not finely sorted and directly enter the end-of-pipe disposal stage, missing out on resource recovery revenue.

Therefore, simply expanding the scale of waste treatment is no longer enough to guarantee project profitability.

II. Changing the Profit Logic: From “Treating Waste” to “Operating Resources”

For municipal solid waste treatment companies, the key to improving profitability lies in calculating three accounts clearly.

The first account: reduction and cost reduction.

Through intelligent sorting, priority is given to recovering usable resources from mixed municipal solid waste, reducing the amount of waste that enters incineration and other end-of-pipe disposal stages. Under a per-ton disposal fee model, a reduction in end-of-pipe disposal volume is expected to directly lower transportation and treatment expenses.

The second account: increased resource revenue.

Recyclables such as PET bottles, PE film, PP film, aluminum cans, and glass in mixed waste can, after precise classification, enter pelletizing, regeneration processing, and other resource utilization channels. The more precisely the waste is sorted, the more stable the raw material quality, and the greater the chance of obtaining higher recycling value.

The third account: efficiency improvement through intelligence.

The efficiency and quality of traditional manual sorting are easily affected by workers’ condition. Through collaborative operation of automated equipment and embodied AI robots, manual input can be reduced, processing efficiency and continuous operation capability can be improved, and unit treatment costs can be further optimized.

III. DataBeyond: Making Mixed Municipal Solid Waste Resource Recovery Create More Value

In response to industry pain points, DataBeyond has launched a one-stop intelligent sorting solution for mixed municipal solid waste.

The entire solution integrates mechanical pretreatment, AI hyperspectral sorting, embodied AI robots, and digital management to achieve automatic feeding, bag breaking, screening, intelligent sorting, robotic fine picking, and tailings compression.

Among them, the AI hyperspectral optical sorter can accurately identify and sort recyclable plastics such as PE and PP, while the embodied robot PICKINGMAN further sorts PET bottles, food containers, aluminum cans, glass, and other mixed plastics.

At present, DataBeyond has implemented dozens of intelligent sorting projects for mixed municipal solid waste. In typical projects, it can achieve approximately 35% waste reduction and approximately 25% resource recovery, providing technical support for reducing end-of-pipe disposal volume and increasing resource recovery revenue. Waste composition and operating conditions differ by region, and actual results need to be assessed based on project conditions.

IV. Whether a Project Is Profitable Still Depends on the Operating Model

Take a treatment center with a daily processing capacity of 1,000 tons of mixed municipal solid waste as an example. If intelligent sorting reduces end-of-pipe disposal volume by 35%, that is equivalent to reducing about 350 tons of waste requiring end-of-pipe treatment per day.

Assuming an end-of-pipe disposal fee of 110 yuan/ton and 365 days of operation per year, the corresponding annual cost reduction space from this item alone is about 14.05 million yuan.

At the same time, the sorted recyclables can also generate resource sales revenue.

However, it should be noted that savings in disposal fees do not equal direct profits for the operating company. Final profit also depends on factors such as the project contract, revenue sharing, selling prices of recyclables, equipment depreciation, operating energy consumption, and maintenance costs.

A truly sustainable business model should combine revenue from waste treatment services, revenue from resource sales, and operating cost optimization to achieve long-term stable operation.

V. The Future: Waste Treatment Plants Will Become Urban Resource Factories

In the future, competition among municipal solid waste treatment companies will not only be about who can process more waste, but also about who can recover more valuable resources at a lower cost.

From traditional landfill and incineration to intelligent sorting and resource utilization, waste treatment is transforming from single end-of-pipe disposal to a resource-first operating model.

DataBeyond will continue to use AI hyperspectral and embodied intelligence technologies to provide efficient, stable, and replicable intelligent sorting solutions for municipal solid waste treatment companies around the world.

Let waste reduction become a cost advantage, and let resource recovery create new profit space.

DataBeyond, enabling municipal solid waste treatment to gradually move from a cost center toward value creation.
